Introduction
Antibiotic resistant infections are
increasing at an alarming rate. Approximately 90% of medication can
only suppress symptoms of disease with no ability to fix or cure the
diseases.
Possibly most worrying is that the Centres for Disease Control in
Atlanta has stated that for the first time in history those born
after the year 2000 are expected to die before their parents - a
truly frightening prospect.
Keep back to school from turning into home sick
After a few incidents of suspected MRSA -a staph infection resistant
to many antibiotics - in local schools last year, Hill said they try
not to overreact ...
"I Know if people knew how MRSA presents and what to do when they
see a boil...and how to clean it...how to do simple things in public
places in between patrons...like hotels, and other such areas and OF
COURSE... medical facilities we could stop the SEVERE ISSUES... MRSA
IS CAUSING"

CA-MRSA in Schools
Harmless bacteria is now rapidly becoming a major problems in schools
and playgrounds.
Children often are not taking adequate precautions and are still
sharing their belongings, fall down and injure themselves..
Rate has appeared to plateau, anecdotally at least, after an
increase beginning about three years ago. It used to be in high
school athletes, but it's working its way down to younger students.
The bacteria is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact or by
touching an item that has come into contact with someone's
infection. Infections begin as a minor cut or sore that does not heal and
may worsen rapidly into an abscess.
Most transmissions are among members of the same household. Once
CA-MRSA colonizes someone, there is the likelihood of colonizing
everyone in the household.

Equipment, Play Grounds & Swimming
In general, schools are not a risk for the average student, but
athletic environments - gyms, locker, computers, musical instruments
and showers are a risk setting.
Children must
be encouraged to wash them selves before and after contact sports,
swimming and music lessons.
Regular cleaning and washing gym equipment is essential to reduce
infection rate. Some equipments may not be easy to wash, using
theatre oil fumes were found to reduce the colony count of bacteria
in some studies.
We will keep you informed about the progress of this study and find
alternative methods to safely sterilize some equipment.....

Skin Infections
Early detection of skin infection
in children is mandatory to prevent spreading of this bacterial
infection in the school. Children suffering from eczema, on steroid
treatment and immune suppression are danger of getting infected.
Parents and teachers must be
vigilant and please send the child home. We hear about some parents not
keen to take their children home when the teachers request. They are
often children of working parents. Other parents may need help them
out because they have no one to look after them.
Physicians must culture most skin and soft tissue infections,
especially boils, and begin antibiotic therapy as if CA-MRSA was the
cause. Doctors often drain boils without culturing, which this day
and time may be incomplete.
